Sarah Badgley Literacy Fund for Rural Ontario Children

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SARAH BADGLEY FUND IS NOW BEING ADMINISTERED THROUGH THE ONTARIO LIBRARY ASSOCIATION. APPLICATION INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND AT www.accessola.org

A grant of up to $500 per year is available from the Rural Learning Association to Ontario rural libraries, and urban libraries that serve rural clientele. The purpose of the grant is to support children’s literacy initiatives. Top consideration will be given to those libraries that promote the love of reading by using the grant for such things as Book Purchases, Literacy Programmes (story time, guest authors, etc.,) and/or Equipment Purchases such as Lego, software and digital media. Connections to the actual literacy outcomes should be demonstrated in the request.

Libraries that the committee has selected as possible recipients of the Fund should include in their full proposals the following items: the potential benefit to the children in the community; a detailed budget; the level of need in the community; access to funding by other organizations; the relevance to literacy through the promotion of the love of reading using books, literacy programmes and/or equipment. The planned project should focus on a sustainability factor that has a long term impact rather than a short term effect. The final application should be no more than two pages long and is due by June 15th.

Sarah Rosalind Badgley
Sarah never learned to read, but she adored books. In July 2001, at the age of three, she was killed in an auto accident. Her parents, Susan and Kerry Badgley of Kemptville, Ontario, initiated the fund through the RLA.

Rural Libraries
As community focal points, rural libraries perform a variety of functions. In addition to offering access to a wide range of reading material, they provide Internet access, make available audio-visual materials, provide local historical and genealogical services, offer children’s programs, and provide services to tourists. In doing all of this, rural libraries serve as community gathering spots that allows residents to meet and exchange ideas. In short, despite shrinking resources, rural libraries perform vital social functions. One goal of the Sarah Badgley Literacy Fund for Rural Ontario Children is to enhance awareness of the valuable public service that rural libraries perform.
